Early 2020 will see Rabbit Island finally re-master and reissue one of her earliest recordings, Songs for Kids. The album is made up of fifteen tracks, recorded to tape by Amber songwriter Amber Fresh in a kitchen in Melbourne. The selections range from new takes on traditional lullabies, to incredibly powerful and simple ruminations on our world and the social systems we have built, like in All the Colours Are Good Colours and Some Days Are Harder Days.

The result is startling. It is a beautiful record, so clearly and simply presented, and made all the more elegant thanks to the steady stream of tape hiss, or the sound of nylon strings buzzing against stone walls.

It’s been a while between drinks for Fremantle’s Rabbit Island, with her fans only occasionally treated to sporadic drips of ambient compositions, written and recorded with her longtime friend and collaborator, Nicholas Allbrook.

While Songs for Kids draws on older material, its release couldn’t be more timely. After a devastating summer in Australia, perhaps the first in which mainstream audiences finally acknowledged the all-to-real effects of climate change, this collection of songs deals a powerful blow. After years of being faced by an Australian people with a stubborn refusal to listen, it seems Amber Fresh sends a message in the simplest and most reliable method we know - writing songs for kids.

Songs for Kids was recorded in Melbourne sometime over the course of 2013. It was mastered at Poons Head by Rob Grant (Tame Impala, POND, Melody's Echo Chamber).
