Released in 1982, Spaces features alto saxophonist Steve Coleman and cellist Muneer Abdul Fataah writing with Hammond as the Doug Hammond Trio, with guests Byard Lancaster (Alto Saxophone, Flute) and Kirk Lightsey (piano). It's an album is full of strong, succinct statements that, according to Musician Magazine (Cliff Tinder, 1982), belie an abstract, soulful approach to free jazz. The exhilarating cello and angular horns show each player's experience and artistry while the heady, asymmetrical rhythmic concepts of Hammond and Steve Coleman add a playfulness to the dissonance. Creative, dynamic, modern, Tinder notes that Spaces gives any jazz master a run for their money.

Composer, percussionist, singer, writer, coordinator, professor, Doug Hammond was born in Tampa Florida in 1942. He started his studies at Blake Junior/Senior High School, known for its excellent marching and concert band and later began advance studies with Don Templeton, who was principal percussionist of Tampa Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. Blues, rhythm & blues, jazz, and gospel music was a part of the community and heard everywhere. Tampa had a thriving music culture in these times and Hammond thrust himself totally into it, oblivious to all else. Blues was his first job as drummer, onto r&b and eventually jazz, his aim.

He was fortunate to have a band director at school who loved jazz and the community which encouraged him onward. A baritone saxophonist who played at the time with BB King got Doug a job playing with the legendary bottle-neck expert guitarist/singer Earl Hooker. By the grace of pianist-vocalist Kitty Daniels, Hammond was introduced to jazz and singing. He did get to play with the great Andy ‘Gump’ Martin. After graduation he moved to Miami for 11 months, there performing with The Five Royals, Sam and Dave and little Willie John.

Moving to Detroit 1965 till 1970, Hammond performed with Donald Byrd, Sonny Red Quintet, Dorothy Ashby Trio, Kirk Lightsey Trio, Smokey Robinson and the Mericles, Marther and the Vandellers. In 1967, he became founding member of the Detroit Creative Musicians Association, an artists-led cooperative which presaged Tribe, Strata and Strata-East. He was also co-founder and coordinator of music/literature collective Focus Novii. Hammond coordinated JAZZ AM BERG in Linz Austria for 16 and one half years, bringing some of the very best artist of jazz, blues internationally.

In 1971, Hammond moved to New York City to perform at Minton’s Playhouse with James Blood Ulmer and John Dana untill it closed, an 8 month stint. He performed in NYC with Sonny Rollins, Kenny Dorham, Charles Mingus, Sam Rivers, Sonny Fortune Quintet and many others. He performed in Europe with Etta James, Nina Simone, Stephan Kurmann Strings and the Family of Percussion. Hammond’s compositions have been performed by Charles Mingus Quintet, Steve Coleman Five Elements, Dave Holland Quintet, Jazzanova, Archie Shepp, Carl Craig, Tribe, Regina Carter, Michael Riessler, Dwight Adams, Paul Epstein, Duesseldorf Studio Ensemble of the Robert Schumann Institute/Germany, Modern Music Trio (Renata Pitrova, Ondrej Vanicek, Petr Pitra) Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic.
